"You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty." ~ Ghandi
I used this quote to guide a discussion with my students about yesterday's tragic events in Boston. The saddest part of this discussion was that almost four months ago I led a very similar one about Sandy Hook Elementary School. They want to know why. And I don't know why. They want to know who and I cannot possibly even imagine. They are scared, they are courageous. They are saddened, they are uplifted. They are children dealing with grown up issues. How do we explain to our children that good always wins over evil? How do we assure them that the monsters under the beds are not real when there they are on our TVs, Facebook, and tweets? I have no answers to those questions. We can teach them to have faith in humanity, look for the helpers, believe in yourself, lift up others, the power of prayer. And then we hope that they remember...
Well said. I love the "look for the helpers" suggestion...it's amazing how the GOOD ALWAYS SHINES THROUGH!!
